This short write up will discuss the 3 main signs of attention deficit disorder, and how you can look out for the signs that can make the difference between prolonged suffering and early intervention.

One of the common causes of attention deficit disorder is impulsiveness, which is often described as the inability to hold an attention span of anything more than a few minutes. In some cases, those affected are unable to hold down their attention or focus on a particular activity for more than a few seconds at a time. They will often jump from one activity to another, with a seemingly endless supply of energy. They will also seem extremely disorganised at whatever they do, they have no structure and cannot compartmentalise their emotions and actions into a sequence of ordered events. This impulsiveness will also extend into social situations, where individuals who are affected by attention deficit disorder will be unable to conduct themselves in a manner deemed unacceptable and will also have a tendency to interrupt the conversation of people around them in a bid to be either heard or to gain attention. This also springs from their impulsive behaviour, done without coherent thought or any rationale behind it.

The second common cause of this is hyperactivity, which is one of the most recognised cause of attention deficit disorder. Individuals will be extremely restless, unable to sit still. Very often, they will play with things around them, move their legs incessantly and aver their eyes and try to speak about something else when in the middle of an activity. This is especially characterised in classroom and school situations as they are unable to fixate upon the teacher for long, with the need to constantly fiddle with objects. Their mind is never at ease and they must find something to do. Children with this condition will often find things to climb and jump and hop around the room. Another characteristic of this condition is the inability to fall asleep because of extreme restlessness, and if they do fall asleep, it is a restless and disturbed one.

Last but not least is the attention disorder, the very one that defines this condition for many people. This may pervade many things, like subjects in school, television, playing games, reading, eating and even playing. Individuals with attention deficit disorder are unable to focus and have mental pandemonium. They are easily distracted by even the slightest of things and have a tendency to day dream. They can never complete a certain task, always leaving it unfinished and have difficulty listening to instruction – often with a oppositional defiant disorder that makes them counter the decisions and act in response to instruction – which often results in tantrums when it comes to kids.

These are the three main signs of attention deficit disorder and if your child or anyone you know seems to be displaying these symptoms, then it is advisable you send them for an assessment, where programmes will be used to ascertain the existence and extent of the condition.
