Betty asks…

Does anyone have any personal experience or knowledge about the effectiveness of ADHD meds in 5-yr-olds?

We’re considering a trial run of meds for my 5-yr-old’s ADHD. My instinct is to oppose it, but he’s having a REALLY hard time, and I’m worried that he’ll come to hate school and learning because even though she’s an amazing teacher, he’s disruptive in class and is REALLY exasperating his teacher.

They seem to think the meds would help.

I’m looking for educated answers. Do not reply that we don’t discipline him, that we’re giving him drugs instead of parenting, or that I need to talk to his doctor. We do, we aren’t and we will.

Pros AND cons, please back up your answers with experience and/or fact.

My ex’s son has ADHD, and was having alot of problems when he first started school. We talked to his doctor, who referred us to a psychiatrist and found out he had ADHD. He prescribed “Straterra”, and we saw an immediate improvement. Pros are that his grades have went steadilly up since then. He loves to go to school now that he can pay attention and isn’t in troble as much. Also, he is generally calmer and listens/pays attention much better. Only con is that he is somewhat grouchy if he misses a dose or is close to being due for a dose.

John asks…

How does you ADHD meds make you feel?

Ive taken some adhd meds one of which made me agry at times. one of which worked ok but the effects lasted about an hour and if i forgot to take them my mind feels cloudy and my adhd is even worse.
so you do they affect you?

barry jennings answers:

Concerta is like magic for me. I’m more organized and in control. I don’t put my foot in my mouth so often. I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I’ve sometimes had trouble sleeping, but no other side effects. I just wish I’d gotten diagnosed earlier.

One of my son’s had terrible reactions to different meds. He ended up doing OK on Focalin for a while. Another of my son’s does extremely well on Adderall. It’s different from person to person. The important thing is to find what combinattion of therapy works best for yourself, and stick with it.
